Dhaka: Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, stated on Wednesday that his country seeks good relations with India and other neighbouring nations, but these relationships should be based on mutual respect and equality. Yunus mentioned that after taking charge as the head of the interim government, he received congratulations from several international leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Yunus also noted that Bangladesh has initiated high-level diplomatic talks with India to address shared challenges. Furthermore, Bangladesh has taken steps to revive SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) to enhance regional cooperation in South Asia. SAARC includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Yunus emphasized that they want the world to recognize Bangladesh as a respected democracy. He further mentioned that the interim government has set up six commissions to implement reforms in six key areas, including the electoral system, police administration, judiciary, anti-corruption efforts, public administration, and the constitution. These commissions are expected to start their work by October and aim to complete their tasks within the next three months.
