India to Focus on Strengthening Economic Ties with the UK: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized that strengthening economic relations with the United Kingdom will be a key priority during his official visit to Britain and the Maldives from July 23 to 26. The four-day trip aims to boost trade, investment, and strategic partnerships in various sectors.

During his stay in the UK, Prime Minister Modi is expected to sign the India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a long-awaited deal designed to enhance bilateral trade flows. Discussions will also cover cooperation in defense, technology, and innovation, with a focus on expanding opportunities for Indian exports in sectors such as textiles, gems and jewelry, and engineering goods.

Modi is scheduled to meet British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and King Charles III to discuss measures for deepening bilateral cooperation. He will also engage with the Indian diaspora and leading business representatives to explore fresh avenues for economic engagement.

Following his visit to the UK, the Prime Minister will travel to the Maldives on July 26 as the chief guest at the country’s Independence Day celebrations. There, the focus will be on strengthening strategic and defense ties, enhancing maritime security cooperation, and promoting stability in the Indian Ocean region.

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed that the trip will include reviews of key agreements, including the planned signing of the FTA on July 24. The deal will address tariff reductions across multiple sectors and is expected to open new markets for Indian products.

This visit also comes ahead of the Global Maritime Security Summit scheduled for October 2024, where India and the Maldives are set to present joint initiatives for regional security.
