India–U.S. Trade Agreement Likely Soon, Says President Trump

In a significant development for global trade relations, U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that a comprehensive trade agreement between India and the United States could be finalized soon. Speaking at a press conference in South Korea during his Asia–Pacific tour, Trump emphasized the deepening economic ties between the two democracies and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very tough and decisive leader.”

Trump expressed optimism about ongoing discussions, stating that negotiations are progressing positively and that both nations are working to create a fair and balanced trade framework.

Talks Enter Final Phase

The U.S. President’s remarks come amid increasing efforts by both sides to conclude long-pending trade discussions before the end of 2025. According to senior officials, the two countries are in the final stages of resolving key issues related to tariff concessions, market access, and energy trade.

India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently confirmed that New Delhi and Washington have been engaged in continuous talks to bridge differences on trade duties, digital commerce, and agricultural products. “We are working towards a trade agreement that ensures mutual benefit,” Goyal said.

Mutual Confidence and Strategic Partnership

Trump highlighted the growing trust between the two nations, describing India as one of America’s most important global partners. “Prime Minister Modi is a strong leader who has transformed India’s global image,” he said, adding that the U.S. and India share “exceptionally good relations.”

The President noted that the proposed agreement would enhance bilateral cooperation in sectors such as defence, energy, and technology, while ensuring greater market access for American companies.

Relief Measures and Economic Impact

According to reports, the trade deal will include significant tariff relief for both countries. The U.S. is expected to ease certain import duties affecting Indian products such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and steel, while India may reduce tariffs on select American goods, including energy and agricultural items.

The agreement is also likely to include provisions for greater energy collaboration, enabling India to import oil and natural gas from the U.S. at competitive prices. Officials stated that the partnership could help both nations strengthen their supply chains and reduce dependency on other markets.

Strong Words on Pakistan and Regional Stability

In his address, Trump also took a firm stance on Pakistan, stating that his administration would continue to hold Islamabad accountable for supporting terrorism. He referred to Pakistan’s former Field Marshal as a “fine soldier” but stressed that the U.S. would not tolerate actions that undermine regional peace.

Trump reiterated that while the U.S. remains open to dialogue with Pakistan, it would never compromise its security interests or strategic partnerships — particularly with India, which he described as “a trusted friend and key ally.”

“Great Relationship with India”

Concluding his remarks, President Trump once again underlined his admiration for India’s leadership and its growing influence on the global stage. “We have a great relationship with India and Prime Minister Modi. He is a man of strong will and great vision,” he said.

The forthcoming agreement, expected to be one of the most comprehensive bilateral trade frameworks between the two countries, is seen as a major step toward deepening the India–U.S. economic and strategic partnership in the years ahead.
