A Blooming World of Flowers Awaits Travellers in Uttarakhand’s Chenap Valley

Uttarakhand is home not only to the world-famous Valley of Flowers but also to another breathtaking floral destination, Chenap Valley, located in Chamoli district. Known for its colourful meadows, rare Himalayan flowers and peaceful natural surroundings, Chenap Valley is steadily attracting nature lovers and adventure travellers.

 

Situated near the foothills of the snow-covered Sona Shikhar, the valley lies close to the village of Thaing, around five kilometres from Joshimath. From July to September, the valley comes alive with more than 400 varieties of Himalayan flowers. During 2025, the tourism department included Chenap Valley in its “Come and Explore” campaign to promote lesser-known destinations of Uttarakhand.

 

The valley is often compared to the famous Valley of Flowers, but it has its own unique charm. Along with flowers, the region is known for medicinal herbs and local vegetation. After 2013, two routes to the valley came into discussion—one through Thaing village and another via Melari Top. From Melari Top, travellers can enjoy a panoramic view of the valley. However, the route through Thaing is considered comparatively easier.

 

Chenap Valley is spread across nearly 40 square kilometres and is especially popular among Bengali tourists. Every year, a large number of travellers from West Bengal visit the valley, particularly during Durga Puja and Diwali holidays. Many also combine their visit with Badrinath and Mana village.

 

Apart from Chenap Valley, nearby attractions include Latu Kund, Jaan Bhuti Dhara, PhulnaBugyal, Kalla Kund, Thaing and Dhar Kharak village, and Maska Bairni, each offering scenic beauty, waterfalls, local culture and mountain views.

 

The best time to visit Chenap Valley is between June and September, though the weather remains cold due to its high altitude. Visitors are advised to carry warm clothes, health-check essentials, food items, water and sleeping bags. The trek from Thaing to Joshimath is about 18 kilometres and is usually covered over three days.

 

Travellers can reach Joshimath from Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun. The distance from Rishikesh to Joshimath is around 247 kilometres. Adequate facilities for food and stay are available in Joshimath, while visitors can also experience local mountain cuisine in nearby villages. With its natural beauty, flowers and peaceful surroundings, Chenap Valley is emerging as one of Uttarakhand’s most attractive hidden travel destinations.
