Arijit Singh Announces Retirement from Playback Singing
Award-winning singer Arijit Singh has announced his decision to step away from playback singing for films, ending an era that defined contemporary Hindi film music for over a decade. The two-time National Film Award recipient shared the announcement through his official social media platforms, expressing gratitude to listeners for their unwavering support throughout his career.
In a heartfelt note, Singh extended his wishes to fans and thanked them for the immense love he received over the years as a playback singer. He stated that he would no longer be accepting new assignments as a playback vocalist for films, describing his journey in cinema music as “a truly remarkable phase.” However, he clarified that he has not distanced himself from music entirely and will continue creating and performing as an independent artist.
Singh’s rise in Bollywood began with the 2011 film Murder 2, where the song “Phir Mohabbat” marked the beginning of his playback career. He gained widespread popularity in 2013 with the song “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2, which became a defining anthem and established him as one of the leading voices of his generation.
Over the years, he delivered a series of chart-topping tracks across genres. Songs such as “Agar Tum Saath Ho” and “Chaleya” became cultural touchstones, resonating deeply with audiences across age groups. His emotive voice and versatility allowed him to seamlessly navigate romantic ballads, soulful melodies, and energetic numbers.
Singh received National Film Awards for his performances in songs from films including Padmaavat (“Binte Dil”) and Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (“Kesariya”). In recognition of his contribution to Indian music, he was also conferred the Padma Shri in 2025.
Throughout his career, Singh remained known for maintaining a low public profile while letting his music speak for itself. His departure from playback singing signals a major transition for the Hindi film music industry, where his voice has been a dominant presence for more than a decade.
Industry observers note that while his absence from film soundtracks will be deeply felt, his continued engagement with music in other formats may open new creative avenues. Fans and fellow musicians have responded with admiration and gratitude, acknowledging his immense influence on modern Indian music.
Arijit Singh’s decision marks the end of a defining chapter in Bollywood playback history, even as his musical journey continues in new and evolving forms.
