China Introduces "Love Education" in universities to Tackle Population Decline

To address its declining birth rate and rapidly aging population, China has urged universities and colleges to introduce "love education" programs. These initiatives aim to promote positive attitudes towards marriage, love, and family among young people, emphasizing their importance in creating a stable and sustainable society.
A Response to Population Decline
China, the world's second-largest country by population at 1.4 billion, recorded a second consecutive year of population decline in 2023. To counter this trend, the government is focusing on encouraging young couples to marry and have children, positioning "love education" as a potential solution to revive fertility rates.
Focus on College Students
College students are seen as key drivers of fertility in the country. However, surveys indicate a significant shift in their views on love and marriage, with many expressing disinterests. According to a poll by China Population News, 57% of college students revealed they do not want to fall in love, citing challenges in balancing relationships with academic and professional goals.
The Jiangsu Xinhua newspaper group, in collaboration with government agencies, emphasized the importance of creating a "healthy and positive culture" around marriage and childbearing. The initiative also aims to foster a supportive environment for young people to navigate relationships and family planning.
Government's Call to Action
In November, the Chinese state council directed local governments to invest resources in addressing the population decline. Policies include promoting marriage at the "right age" and spreading awareness about the importance of family life. Despite these efforts, demographers remain sceptical about their immediate impact on changing societal attitudes among younger generations.
Bridging Cultural Gaps
The government's plan underscores the need for educational institutions to take responsibility for shaping the mindset of young people. By introducing courses and resources on love and relationships, the program hopes to instil a sense of responsibility towards family and fertility, easing the burden on future government resources.
As China grapples with its demographic challenges, the focus on fostering emotional connections among its youth could play a crucial role in balancing the needs of its aging population with the demands of economic growth.
