Chinese Dancers Make History with Ramayana Dance Drama

A group of Chinese dancers created history on Saturday by performing a dance drama based on the Indian epic Ramayana. The production, titled Adi Kavya – The First Poem, was staged in China for the first time on such a grand platform.
The performance was choreographed by renowned Chinese Bharatanatyam artist Jin Shanshan, and featured nearly 80 local Chinese artists. This dance drama was based on a Chinese translation of the Ramayana, marking the first instance of the epic being brought to life on such a significant stage in China.
Indian Ambassador to China, Pradeep Rawat, described Saturday’s performance as extraordinary. He highlighted that it was the first time the Ramayana had been depicted in such a format in China. "We have nearly 80 artists participating in this production, all of whom are Chinese. Their ages range from 5 to 80 years, and for most of them, this is their first time performing on such a grand stage," he stated.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing, along with various Chinese cultural organizations and the foreign affairs department of the Communist Party of China, supported the event. The production also received assistance from institutions such as the China International Development Cooperation Agency and the prestigious Peking Opera House.
Speaking about the deep connection between the Chinese performers and Indian culture, Ambassador Rawat said, "Their passion for Indian culture has brought them together. Initially, they were strangers to each other, but after spending over two months in rigorous training and rehearsals, they have formed a family-like bond."
Several Chinese officials and Indian dignitaries attended the performance, celebrating this unique cultural exchange between the two nations.
