Delhi High Court to Get Three New Judges; Appointments Cleared for Multiple High Courts Across India

The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the appointment of three judicial officers as judges of the Delhi High Court, along with several other appointments for high courts across the country. The decision was made during a meeting presided over by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, with Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B.R. Gavai as members of the Collegium.

The recommended names for Delhi High Court judges include Dharmesh Sharma, Girish Kathpalia, and Manoj Jain. The appointments are part of a wider move to fill judicial vacancies and strengthen the judiciary’s functioning.

In addition to Delhi, the Collegium has approved the elevation of 10 judicial officers to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. These include judges such as Pradeep Yadav, Anand Singh Shekhawat, Anup Kumar Trivedi, and Raj Kumar Firdous. Similarly, the Allahabad High Court will get three new judges, while the Patna High Court will receive one.

The Collegium also cleared appointments for the Gauhati High Court and the Telangana High Court. The Gauhati High Court will welcome two new judges—Justice Vinod Kumar and Justice Venkatesh Nayak—while the Telangana High Court will see the addition of Justices Suresh Kumar and Ravi Mohan.

These appointments aim to address the shortage of judges and expedite the judicial process in various high courts. The Collegium stressed the importance of timely appointments to ensure smooth functioning of the judiciary and reduce case backlogs.

The Ministry of Law and Justice will now issue formal notifications for the appointments, following which the new judges will assume office. This development marks a significant step towards strengthening the judicial infrastructure ahead of the 2025 judicial calendar.
