Justice Sanjiv Khanna Appointed as 51st Chief Justice of India
New Delhi, 11 November 2024: Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India, marking a new era in the Indian judiciary. He was sworn in today, stepping into the esteemed role of the country’s highest judicial authority. Justice Khanna succeeds outgoing Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, following the established convention of appointing the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as per the Constitution of India under Article 124(2).
As Chief Justice, Justice Khanna will lead the Supreme Court, overseeing the allocation of cases, formation of constitutional benches, and critical judgments on key issues of law. Additionally, he will carry out significant administrative responsibilities, including the maintenance of the court roster and the appointment of judicial staff. His appointment also makes him the de facto Chancellor of the National Law School of India University.
Justice Khanna, known for his integrity and commitment to justice, is set to bring his judicial expertise and progressive outlook to this pivotal role until his tenure ends upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.
