Lack of Oral Care Costs India $7.2 Billion Annually; 90% of Indians Suffer from Dental Issues
Neglecting oral health is forcing 90% of Indians to struggle with dental problems. This neglect not only increases the risk of diseases like cancer but is also causing the nation an economic loss of over $7.2 billion (about ₹60,000 crore) every year, according to a report by the Oral Health Movement (India).
Prama Narasimhan, the movement’s national lead, explained that over 2.6 billion people globally suffer from untreated oral health issues. In India, dental diseases are widespread, with 55% of urban populations experiencing nighttime dental pain.
Screening of Over 4.5 Million People
Under the Oral Health Movement initiative, screenings were conducted in more than 700 districts, covering over 18,000 pincodes. More than 4.5 million people were screened, and results showed only 10% of them brushed their teeth twice a day, while 24% had never visited a dentist. Alarmingly, 44% of people reported chronic dental issues.
The 2-2-2 Formula to Eliminate the Root Cause
Prama recommended adopting the 2-2-2 formula to address oral health problems:
- Brush your teeth twice daily (morning and night)
- For two minutes each time
- Visit the dentist two times a year
She explained that following this simple regimen can significantly reduce oral disease risk. The Oral Health Movement has also created a network of 50,000 dentists to support improved oral hygiene nationwide.
