New Airport Metro Route Planned to Launch Namo Bharat Services
Preparations are underway to operate Namo Bharat trains on a newly proposed airport metro route, aimed at strengthening rapid transit connectivity between Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Authorities have initiated planning for this route as part of efforts to improve seamless, high-speed public transport access to the airport and adjoining urban corridors.
According to officials, the proposed route is expected to begin from Delhi’s Sadar Kala Khana area and pass through key locations including Noida City Centre and Ghaziabad, before extending towards the airport. The alignment is designed to integrate existing metro and rapid rail infrastructure, allowing passengers to travel efficiently between major transit hubs. A detailed feasibility report will determine the final length of the route, the number of stations, and the project timeline.
Under the preliminary proposal, the route may include approximately 22 stations, with an equal number planned for Namo Bharat and metro services to ensure balanced connectivity. The project aims to enhance last-mile connectivity to the airport while reducing congestion on roads and easing pressure on existing transport systems.
Officials indicated that the new alignment would require certain changes to the current airport connectivity plan to ensure direct and smooth integration with Delhi’s transport network. The proposal suggests linking multiple metro sectors and rapid rail stations, enabling passengers to reach the airport without frequent transfers.
The estimated cost of the project is reported to be around ₹20,637 crore. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared with the support of the Uttar Pradesh government and was submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for approval. Following initial observations, the DPR underwent revisions, and further discussions were held to address technical and alignment-related concerns.
Meetings involving senior officials from central and state agencies were held to evaluate the feasibility of operating Namo Bharat services on this route. Authorities emphasised that integrating Namo Bharat trains with the airport corridor would significantly reduce travel time and offer a faster, more reliable alternative to road-based transport.
Experts noted that the proposed route could transform airport connectivity in the National Capital Region by providing a high-speed, environmentally sustainable transit option. Once approved and implemented, the project is expected to improve passenger convenience, enhance regional mobility, and support long-term urban transport planning objectives.
