Social Media Distracting Youth from Focused Thinking

Excessive use of social media is making it increasingly difficult for people — especially the youth — to concentrate and stay focused on their goals, according to a new study.

The research reveals that both adults and young individuals are becoming so accustomed to constant online engagement that they find it challenging to sustain attention, even during important tasks. This growing distraction is linked to increased stress and reduced productivity.

The study, conducted jointly by Singapore University of Technology and Design and the American University of Iowa, found that platforms like Instagram and TikTok are significantly affecting users’ attention spans. Prolonged scrolling and frequent notifications are rewiring the brain’s reward system, making it harder to focus for extended periods.

According to the findings, social media not only reduces young people’s ability to concentrate but also affects emotional stability and decision-making. The survey reported that 68% of participants experienced a noticeable drop in focus, while many admitted they could not go more than a few minutes without checking their phones.

Experts warn that this pattern, if left unchecked, could have long-term effects on mental health, academic performance, and overall productivity. They recommend limiting screen time, setting usage boundaries, and engaging in offline activities to rebuild attention spans.
