Unhealthy Eating Habits Leading to Rising Health Issues in India, Study Reveals

A recent report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) - National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) has revealed alarming statistics about the role of poor dietary habits in causing health issues across India. The study indicates that 56.4% of diseases in the country are linked to unhealthy food consumption, highlighting the urgent need for dietary changes.
The report points out that the increasing consumption of fast food, processed snacks, and junk food is one of the primary reasons behind the growing number of lifestyle-related illnesses, including obesity, type-2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. Experts warn that these conditions are not only affecting adults but also impacting children and adolescents.
Impact on Public Health
The research suggests that poor dietary choices contribute significantly to malnutrition and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Experts emphasize that unhealthy food habits begin in childhood, leading to long-term health complications. Pregnant women who consume unbalanced diets are also at higher risk of complications, affecting both mother and child health.
The Role of Changing Lifestyles
The study notes that the fast-paced urban lifestyle is one of the main reasons why people are shifting towards processed and packaged foods. Easy availability, affordability, and aggressive marketing of junk food have further worsened the situation.
Experts stress the importance of a balanced diet rich in whole grains, lentils, fresh fruits, and vegetables to counter the health crisis. They advocate for increased awareness about the dangers of excessive sugar, trans fats, and sodium intake.
Government and Public Health Response
Health experts and policymakers are urging stricter regulations on the marketing and availability of unhealthy foods, along with nutrition education programs in schools and workplaces. The government is also being advised to promote fortified and organic food options as a long-term solution to tackle the health crisis.
