Uttar Pradesh Emerges as India’s Top Tourist Destination, Records 2.4-Fold Growth in 2025
Uttar Pradesh has secured the top position in the country in terms of tourist arrivals, registering an unprecedented 2.4-fold increase in visitor numbers in 2025. The surge reflects the state’s sustained focus on tourism development, infrastructure expansion, and cultural promotion under a comprehensive policy framework.
According to official data, 156.18 crore tourists visited Uttar Pradesh in 2025, placing the state at the forefront nationally in terms of footfall. The growth has been attributed to strategic initiatives aimed at promoting religious, cultural, and eco-tourism while preserving heritage sites and enhancing visitor facilities.
The Tourism and Culture Department has credited the state government’s long-term vision and policy-driven approach for the transformation. A combination of infrastructure upgrades, improved connectivity, destination branding, and thematic circuit development has played a pivotal role in expanding the state’s tourism footprint.
Officials highlighted that the successful implementation of the 2022 tourism policy and the grand organization of major events, including the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj in 2025, significantly contributed to the spike in visitor numbers. The Mahakumbh, in particular, drew massive domestic and international participation, reinforcing Uttar Pradesh’s global religious tourism appeal.
In 2025, the state advanced the development of 12 thematic tourism sectors and 12 dedicated tourism circuits. Investment proposals worth ₹34,439 crore were targeted under 1,546 project proposals to boost tourism infrastructure and services. Additionally, 49 tourism projects were launched during the year to strengthen hospitality, connectivity, and site development.
National Tourism Day 2025 was observed with a focus on “Tourism for Inclusive Growth,” underscoring the government’s commitment to sustainable and community-based tourism models. The state is increasingly positioning itself as a cultural tourism hub, leveraging its rich heritage, spiritual significance, and historical landmarks.
With iconic destinations such as Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura, Vrindavan, Prayagraj, and Agra drawing consistent footfall, the state’s diversified tourism strategy has expanded beyond religious tourism to include heritage walks, riverfront development, eco-tourism initiatives, and rural tourism experiences.
The remarkable rise in tourist numbers in 2025 signals Uttar Pradesh’s emergence as a major tourism powerhouse. Officials assert that continued investment, policy support, and destination promotion will further consolidate the state’s leadership position in the national tourism landscape.
