Uttar Pradesh to Use AI for Tourist Footfall Analysis at Key Destinations

In a major step towards smart tourism management, Uttar Pradesh is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to monitor and analyze tourist footfall across the state’s leading pilgrimage and heritage sites. The initiative will help the Tourism Department gather accurate real-time data on the number of visitors, improving planning, safety, and infrastructure management.

The pilot phase of the project will begin with three of the state’s most prominent destinations — Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur. Advanced AI-based systems will be installed to automatically track and count visitors without the need for manual intervention.

According to officials, this initiative, powered by AI-based Facial Recognition Systems, will assist authorities in understanding tourist flow patterns, seasonal trends, and visitor demographics. The technology will use high-resolution cameras and real-time image processing to estimate footfall and identify peak hours, thereby enhancing crowd management during major religious events and festivals.

The data collected will also aid in infrastructure development, improve visitor facilities, and strengthen security arrangements at high-traffic locations. Moreover, tourism planners will be able to design better promotional strategies based on accurate analytics rather than assumptions.

Officials from the state Tourism Department stated that once the pilot phase proves successful, the AI-based visitor analytics system will be extended to other major destinations across Uttar Pradesh, enabling a comprehensive digital transformation of the state’s tourism ecosystem.
