CDO Abhinav Gopal Crosses Palk Strait, Brings International Recognition to District

On April 18, India’s elite rowing team achieved a historic and inspiring feat by successfully crossing the Palk Strait. Representing Ghaziabad, CDO (Chief Development Officer) Abhinav Gopal made the nation and the district proud with this international-level accomplishment.
The Palk Strait expedition was organized under the guidance of the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS), Goa, with coordination from the Government of India. Covering a stretch of approximately 28 to 30 kilometers between Talaimannar (Sri Lanka) and Dhanushkodi (India), this expedition was not only a physical challenge but also a symbolic message of India’s growing capabilities and unity.
Significance of the Expedition
This achievement was part of the "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" celebrations, commemorating 75 years of Indian independence. The team used ocean rowing boats with a width of 1.2 meters and length of 7.03 meters. Their success has qualified them for the upcoming Ocean Rowing Championships in 2024 to be held in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
A Message of Patriotism and Endurance
Abhinav Gopal emphasized that the expedition was more than a physical challenge — it was a powerful expression of India’s growing strength and unity. The mission began from Talaimannar and culminated in Dhanushkodi. A special team from the Indian Coast Guard and Navy provided safety and monitoring support throughout.
The crossing started at 7:50 AM and took approximately 30 minutes to reach Indian territory, completing a total distance of 182 km over 7 days of rowing.
