Mental Health Deteriorates Due to Superstitious Practices

Ghaziabad: A growing number of patients suffering from mental health issues are worsening after seeking unscientific treatments like exorcisms and faith healing. Following the deterioration of their conditions, families are increasingly turning to mental health professionals for help.

In the Ghaziabad district hospital, an alarming trend has emerged where patients who sought non-medical interventions for mental illnesses are now flocking to the hospital’s psychiatric department. The outpatient department (OPD) is witnessing 90 to 95 patients daily, with many having previously undergone superstitious rituals that failed to address their conditions. This increase highlights the urgent need for public awareness about scientific mental health treatments.

Case 1: Software Engineer’s Condition Worsens

A software engineer working with a prominent company in Noida developed severe anxiety and depression. Initially, he visited a faith healer, but after the treatment, his condition worsened. When his family realized the severity, they brought him to the hospital, where he is now receiving proper psychiatric care.

Case 2: Family Believed in Spirit Possession

In another case, a young man believed he was possessed and refused to leave his room, fearing he would be harmed by a spirit. Despite his family’s attempts to cure him through traditional rituals, his condition deteriorated until they finally sought medical advice. He is now under observation at the hospital.

Early Signs and Precautions

Dr. R. Choudhary, a psychiatrist at the hospital, emphasized recognizing early signs of mental illness, such as withdrawal from social interactions, disrupted sleep, and persistent sadness. He advises that patients should avoid isolating themselves and seek medical treatment instead of superstitious solutions.

Precautionary Tips:

  • Manage stress through practices like yoga and meditation.
  • Avoid isolation and maintain social connections.
  • Seek timely medical advice for mental health issues.
  • Don’t rely on unverified methods for treatment.

The hospital’s psychiatric department continues to see a rise in patients whose conditions have been neglected or mishandled due to reliance on superstitious practices. Health experts stress the importance of proper medical intervention to prevent further deterioration of mental health among patients.
