Should Horses in Equestrian Sports Be Considered Athletes or Equipment? Debate Intensifies

The debate over whether horses used in equestrian sports should be considered athletes or equipment has taken centre stage, raising questions about their classification. The Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) advocates for horses to be recognized as athletes. However, equestrians have urged caution, pointing out that such a designation could lead to complications in future policy and procedural matters.
Legal Battle Over Classification
The Delhi High Court is currently hearing a petition concerning the administrative powers of the EFI. The petition was filed by a recognized equestrian from Rajasthan, who argued that the decision-making authority regarding such classifications should rest exclusively with state associations.
During a hearing, the EFI cited a related case from Delhi, where the federation had dismissed the concerns of equestrian participants who believe the reclassification might not significantly impact voting rights in EFI elections.
Mixed Opinions in the Community
Rao Raja Pattod, a former member of India’s equestrian team that won bronze medals in the Asian Games in 1998, 2002, and 2006, downplayed the issue. "It makes no difference whether horses are classified as athletes or equipment because this decision does not affect voting in federation elections," he said.
Implications for the Future
The issue has also drawn interest from athletes, equestrian experts, and policymakers. The outcome of this debate could set a precedent for how animals in other sports are perceived and categorized. Stakeholders have emphasized the need for careful deliberation to avoid complications in the sport’s administration and future regulations.
