T20 World Cup: Equal Prize Money for Women as Men
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday that the prize money for the T20 World Cup will now be the same for men and women. The upcoming Women's T20 World Cup will be held in the West Indies and the United States of America next month.
Total Prize Money Increased by 225%
- The prize money for the Women’s T20 World Cup will be ₹66.62 crore, which is an increase of 225% from the previous amount of ₹20.52 crore.
- The Men's T20 World Cup will have ₹93.52 crore in prize money, and both the men's and women's teams will receive equal amounts for winning.
Tournament in October
- The Women’s T20 World Cup will take place from October 3 to October 20, with matches being held in the United States and the West Indies.
- The group matches will conclude by October 15, and the semi-finals will be held on October 18. The final match will be played on October 20.
- The tournament will feature 18 days of action, with India set to face off against six-time champion Australia in their campaign opener.
Winners to Receive 134% More Money
- The team that wins the Women’s T20 World Cup will receive ₹19.60 crore, a 134% increase from the ₹8.37 crore awarded in the last tournament.
- The men’s champions will receive the same amount, and the runner-up will be awarded ₹20.50 crore.
Runner-Up Will Also Receive Substantial Prize
- The runner-up team will receive ₹9.80 crore, while the third-place team will be awarded ₹4.18 crore.
Even Losing in the Semi-Finals Will Yield ₹5 Crore
- Teams that lose in the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup will still receive ₹5 crore. This amount has been increased by ₹65 lakh from the previous tournament.
ICC's Long-Term Vision
The ICC board, as part of its 2030 development program, decided to introduce equal prize money for men’s and women’s cricket seven years ahead of schedule. Now, cricket has become the first sport to offer equal prize money for men and women at this level.
