The Blindfold Removed from Lady Justice’s Eyes

The Blindfold Removed from Lady Justice’s Eyes
Efforts to Consciously Send a Message that Justice and Law are No Longer Blind
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has been working towards transforming the Supreme Court and judicial system of India to emphasize that justice is equal for everyone, and that law is no longer blind. The depiction of Lady Justice at the Supreme Court has undergone a significant change to reflect this ideology, with the blindfold removed from her eyes.
Previously, Lady Justice was depicted holding scales with closed eyes to represent impartial justice. However, this portrayal has now been altered, and a new statue has been installed in front of the Supreme Court, showing Lady Justice with open eyes and holding a book, signifying the Constitution, in one hand and the scales in the other. This shift aims to communicate that justice should be delivered with awareness and clarity.
Another change is the inclusion of a live screen outside the Supreme Court, allowing the general public to stay updated on the court’s activities and sessions. This screen, placed near Tilak Marg, will display ongoing proceedings of the court, enabling citizens to stay informed about key decisions and events.
This change signifies Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s vision for a modern judiciary that prioritizes transparency, engagement, and a commitment to seeing the realities of society, ensuring that justice is served without prejudice.
