Assistant Labour Commissioner’s Steno Suspended; Contract Worker’s Services Terminated Over Bribery Case

The Anti-Corruption team on Wednesday arrested Steno Amit Kumar and contractual computer operator Bhuvanesh Sharma from the office of Assistant Labour Commissioner Vinod Kumar for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10,000. The bribe was reportedly demanded in exchange for issuing a compensation cheque to the family of deceased bus driver Narendra Tyagi.

Following the arrest, the steno was immediately suspended, and the services of the contractual computer operator were terminated. The case dates back to 2007 when Tyagi, employed as a bus driver by the Transport Department, died in an accident. The labour court had ordered compensation for his widow, Mukta, amounting to ₹7.1 lakh, along with ₹67,000 in interest.

On July 10, the complainant approached the Labour Department to collect the compensation cheque, but the accused allegedly demanded ₹10,000 to release it. The complainant then informed the Anti-Corruption team, which laid a trap at the Labour Office in Ashok Nagar. The two accused were caught red-handed accepting the bribe.

Following the incident, Deputy Labour Commissioner Anupam Mishra confirmed the immediate suspension of the steno and the termination of the contractual worker’s services. Authorities have initiated further investigation into the case to determine if more individuals were involved in the bribery scheme.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau has stated that strict action will be taken against all those found guilty of exploiting beneficiaries for financial gain
