India Among Top 10 Nations Globally in Patents, Trademarks, and Industrial Designs
WIPO Report... Record 15.7% Increase in Applications

India has secured a position among the top 10 countries globally in patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. This was highlighted in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Global Innovation Index Report for 2024.
According to the WIPO 2024 report, India saw the highest increase in patent applications among the top 20 nations, with a remarkable growth rate of 15.7% in 2023. With 64,480 patent applications filed, India now ranks higher than before, surpassing many developed nations.
Over the past six years, India witnessed significant growth in patents and industrial design applications from 2018 to 2023, while trademark registrations increased by 60%. This trend shows India's commitment to fostering innovation and intellectual property protection.
Trademark Filings Witness 6% Growth
At the global level, India's trademark filings ranked sixth, with a growth rate of 6.1% in 2023. Approximately 90% of these applications came from local citizens.
Domestic Filings (55.2%)
The report highlights a consistent 36.4% increase in India’s industrial design applications. This growth can be attributed to the expansion of manufacturing, design, and creative sectors. Major sectors—like consumer goods, electronics, automotive, machinery, healthcare, and cosmetics—dominate the industrial design applications, strengthening India's global position.
