Vedanta Chairman Says Responsibility for Boiler Accident Had Been Handed Over to NGSL

Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal has publicly presented his position on the boiler accident that occurred on 14 April at a power plant in Sakti district of Chhattisgarh. In a post on the social media platform X, he said that the plant concerned had been handed over to NGSL, a subsidiary of NTPC-GE, with full responsibility for operations and maintenance.

Agarwal stated that the Athena power plant had followed high safety standards and that the responsibility for safe operation and maintenance had been assigned to NGSL. Despite this, he described the occurrence of such a major accident as deeply unfortunate and a matter of serious concern.

He compared the situation to a vehicle owner handing over a vehicle to a trustworthy driver with the expectation that the vehicle would be operated safely. According to him, every contract and arrangement made by Vedanta gives the highest priority to safety, and the policies of all concerned agencies are built around this principle.

Paying tribute to the 25 people who lost their lives in the accident, Agarwal said the loss was irreparable. He stated that such incidents are unexpected and leave a deep impact on the families of victims as well as on the wider industrial community.

He further said that the past few months had been difficult for him and that the tragedy had caused deep personal grief. At the beginning of the year, he lost his young grandson, and the subsequent death of 25 colleagues in the boiler accident had placed him in profound sorrow.

The statement is significant because it is the first public clarification issued by the Vedanta Group Chairman on the accident. His remarks indicate that Vedanta is seeking to clarify the operational responsibility of the plant while also acknowledging the seriousness of the tragedy and the human loss involved.

The incident has once again raised important questions regarding industrial safety, accountability in outsourced plant operations, responsibility of contractors and principal employers, and the need for strict compliance with safety standards in high-risk industrial establishments.
