Big News from Odisha: Huge Gold Deposits Found in Six Districts

Gold-rich Odisha has now confirmed the presence of large reserves of the precious metal. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has verified the existence of gold deposits across six districts of Odisha—Deogarh, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, and Koraput.

According to officials, preparations are underway to begin detailed exploration and mining of these reserves. GSI estimates suggest that more than 20 metric tons of gold may be available in different locations of these districts.

Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) has been tasked with carrying out the next phase of exploration. Initial surveys have identified gold blocks in Deogarh, while other districts have shown promising signs of not only gold but also silver, copper, nickel, and platinum.

How Gold is Explored

The process of locating gold involves scientific and technical steps. Geological surveys analyze soil and rock samples, followed by chemical testing to confirm mineral presence. Magnetic, electrical, and gravitational surveys are also conducted. Satellite mapping and remote sensing further help identify gold-bearing zones. Based on this data, estimates of reserves and mining potential are prepared.

Impact and Opportunities

Experts say the gold concentration in these districts is high enough to justify large-scale mining in the near future. If properly harnessed, this discovery could create new opportunities for local youth employment, boost regional industries, and strengthen Odisha’s role as a gold-producing state.

Currently, India imports about 800 tons of gold annually, which heavily impacts foreign exchange reserves. With India producing only 1.6 tons of gold domestically each year, Odisha’s new reserves could help reduce import dependency and enhance self-reliance.
