60 World-Class Labour Chowks to be Built Across 17 Municipal Corporations in Uttar Pradesh
In a landmark initiative to support daily wage laborers, the Labour Department of Uttar Pradesh is developing 60 world-class Labour Chowks (Labour Squares) across 17 municipal corporations. For the first time, the state government is implementing this organized model to improve the working and living conditions of migrant and local laborers.
Each Labour Chowk will be built at an estimated cost of ₹20 lakh and will include facilities such as roads, drinking water, shelters, rest areas, toilets, food arrangements, and registration desks.
Labour Chowks to be Ready in 4–6 Months
The first phase includes construction in key urban centers such as Kanpur, Lucknow, Noida, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj, Agra, and Meerut—with six chowks in each of these cities. In total, 60 chowks will be developed, offering improved job opportunities and facilities to over 80,000 registered laborers.
The Labour Department will manage operations, while land will be provided by the respective municipal bodies. Registration desks will also be set up to streamline enrollment and facilitate worker welfare schemes.
Key Facilities to be Included:
- Sheltered rest spaces
- Potable water and food stalls
- Toilets and sanitation
- Job registration and placement support
This model is expected to be fully developed within 4 to 6 months. Labour Secretary Dr. Harish Chandra said this is the first time such a comprehensive and worker-friendly infrastructure initiative is being implemented at this scale in the state.
The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader efforts to ensure dignity and better living standards for the unorganized workforce.
