A Soul-Stirring Evening of Sawan Melodies and Cultural Pride
An Honour to Meet the Torchbearer of Indian Folk Music – Padma Shri Malini Awasthi Ji
As the fragrance of Sawan filled the air, the Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi witnessed an unforgettable celebration — ‘Sawan: A Celebration of Rain’. The highlight of the evening was the mesmerising performance by none other than Padma Shri Malini Awasthi Ji, whose voice carried not just melody, but the very spirit of Indian soil.
It was a privilege and honour for me, Satendra Singh, Chairman – Indian Council of Industrial Management (ICIM), to meet her in person and witness the magic she weaves through her music.
Malini Ji has not just sung folk songs — she has revived and preserved them with unmatched devotion. She has reintroduced India’s cultural roots to the world stage, bringing back the soul of Bhojpuri, Awadhi, and Hindi folk traditions through her soulful renditions of Kajri, Jhoola, Malhar, and Thumri.
Her performance wasn’t just a concert — it was a journey into the heritage of India.
She beautifully intertwined the melodies with tales of India’s freedom struggle, the courage of soldiers, and the emotions of everyday life — proving that folk music is not just art, it is identity, resistance, and celebration.
Her voice is the voice of the land — echoing the joy of rain, the pain of separation, the devotion of lovers, and the strength of tradition.
I congratulate and salute Malini Ji for her lifelong dedication to promoting and preserving our country’s rich folk heritage. Her art is not just music, it is a movement — one that must be cherished and supported by every generation.
Let us all celebrate this legacy and share the stories of such cultural icons who keep the heartbeat of Bharat alive through their timeless art.
