India to Procure Advanced Weapons Worth ₹79,000 Crore for All Three Armed Forces

In a major move to strengthen India’s defense preparedness, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved a series of procurement proposals worth approximately ₹79,000 crore for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The move aims to equip the Indian Armed Forces with cutting-edge technology and modern weapon systems under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

A large portion of these procurements will be sourced from domestic manufacturers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to boosting India’s indigenous defense production capabilities.

Modern Equipment for the Indian Army

The Indian Army will receive several advanced systems designed to enhance battlefield capabilities and mobility:

  • Nag Missile System (Tank) - NAMICA-2: This anti-tank guided missile system will significantly enhance the Army’s strike power and precision targeting ability.
  • Ground-Based Mobile Electronic Warfare Systems: These indigenous systems will provide enhanced electronic surveillance and jamming capabilities to counter enemy communications and radar networks.
  • Mounted Gun Systems: Designed for rapid deployment in high-altitude and remote regions, these systems will improve artillery mobility and responsiveness.

Key Additions for the Indian Navy

The Navy’s procurement list includes several advanced platforms and weapon systems to boost maritime security:

  • Medium-Range Anti-Ship Missiles (MRAShM): For enhanced surface warfare capabilities against enemy vessels.
  • 30mm Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS): For ship defense against incoming missiles and aerial threats.
  • Utility Landing Craft (Amphibious Vessels): For operations in coastal and island territories.
  • Electronic Warfare Systems (EWDS): For superior intelligence gathering, threat detection, and countermeasure capabilities.
  • 16 High-Speed Super Rapid Boats: To strengthen coastal patrol and quick-response operations.

New Systems for the Indian Air Force

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will acquire advanced aircraft, radar, and missile technologies to enhance air dominance and surveillance capacity. Among the approvals are:

  • Next-Generation Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, precision-guided munitions, and upgraded electronic warfare suites.
  • These procurements will significantly strengthen India’s air defense grid and operational readiness in multi-domain warfare environments.

A Major Step Toward Defence Self-Reliance

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that this procurement drive represents one of the largest indigenization pushes in recent years. Of the total approved value, over ₹67,000 crore worth of equipment will be sourced from Indian manufacturers, promoting local defense industries and generating new employment opportunities.

This move aligns with India’s long-term vision of becoming a global defense manufacturing hub. The acquisitions also aim to ensure that India remains equipped to respond effectively to future threats across land, sea, and air.

Strengthening India’s Strategic Edge

Officials highlighted that these procurements will substantially enhance operational efficiency, surveillance, and deterrence capability. The addition of indigenous systems will reduce dependency on imports while promoting technological innovation through public-private collaboration in the defense sector.

By focusing on modern warfare needs — from electronic countermeasures and long-range strike systems to network-centric platforms — India’s latest defense upgrade marks a decisive step toward achieving full-spectrum strategic readiness.
