India's First Hydrogen Train to Be Among the World’s Longest & Most Powerful: Vaishnaw

India is making rapid strides toward launching its first hydrogen-powered train, a landmark step in green energy adoption for the railway sector. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Friday that work on the project is progressing swiftly.
Green Future for Indian Railways
• The first hydrogen train will be developed as part of India's Railway Pilot Project.
• It will be one of the world’s longest and most powerful trains once completed.
• The train is being designed and developed entirely in India, following international safety and performance standards set by RDSO (Research Designs & Standards Organization).
Hydrogen Fuel – A Game Changer
Railway Minister Ashok Kumar Yadav emphasized that this hydrogen train will be equipped with a unified hydrogen production and storage system, ensuring a cleaner and more efficient alternative to conventional petroleum-based fuels.
Additionally, the train will include:
• Advanced safety mechanisms to meet international railway standards.
• Onboard hydrogen fuel storage and distribution system for uninterrupted operation.
• A futuristic rail transport model, setting a new benchmark in sustainable rail travel.
Major Rail Manufacturing in Chennai & Kapurthala
• Over the past three years, Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has produced 640 Vande Bharat train coaches.
• The Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala has built 320 modern coaches for Indian Railways.
• In total, 5,414 train coaches have been manufactured in the last three years, enhancing passenger comfort and travel experience.
With the introduction of hydrogen-powered trains, India is not only embracing green technology but also paving the way for cleaner and more efficient railway transportation. The future of India's rail sector is now set for a major transformation.
