IPL Tickets Classified as Luxury, Now Attract 40% GST

Watching the Indian Premier League (IPL) live in stadiums will now become costlier, as match tickets have been brought under the 40% GST slab. The GST Council has categorized IPL tickets alongside luxury and demerit goods such as tobacco products, casinos, and racecourses.

From 28% to 40%

Until now, IPL tickets attracted 28% GST. With the new classification, ticket buyers will pay significantly more. For instance, a high-demand ticket priced at ₹42,350 will now cost around ₹46,350 under the new regime.

Premium Sports in Luxury Bracket

The Council explained that IPL tickets fall under “luxury spending” and are therefore taxed heavily to balance revenue needs. This is part of the government’s broader approach of lowering taxes on essential goods while compensating through higher levies on luxury consumption.

Broader Impact on Sports Events

The move is expected to affect not just IPL but other premium sporting leagues as well. Tickets for elite matches, which were already priced high, will now see a further increase. For example, Bengaluru’s most expensive IPL seat could touch ₹4,000 or more, while premium box tickets could cross ₹40,000 after GST.

However, affordable tickets below ₹500 remain under the 18% slab, ensuring that general cricket fans still have access to stadiums at relatively lower rates.

Balancing Act

Officials emphasized that while entertainment tax rates have gone up for premium categories, the common man remains protected with cheaper ticket ranges taxed at lower rates. This ensures both revenue generation and inclusivity in public access to sports.
