Justice Ram Subramanian Appointed as the New Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission

Former Supreme Court judge Justice V. Ramasubramanian has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). His appointment comes following the conclusion of Justice Arun Kumar Mishra’s tenure earlier this year, leaving the position vacant.
President Draupadi Murmu announced the appointment along with the induction of former Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, Prashant Kumar Kananugo, and former Chief Justice of Bihar High Court, Ranjan Saranagi, as members of the NHRC. Justice Kanungo has previously served as the Chairperson of the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights.
Justice Ramasubramanian is well-recognized for his landmark rulings, including his stance on restricting the operation of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin in India under the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) directive. He was also a member of the Supreme Court bench that upheld the constitutionality of demonetisation, underscoring his commitment to constitutional mandates.
In another notable judgment, Justice Ramasubramanian emphasized that ministers in their official capacity are not responsible for private statements but hold accountability for statements made in the Parliament or Assembly as representatives of the government.
Justice Ramasubramanian’s extensive judicial experience and decisive leadership are expected to further strengthen the NHRC’s mission of safeguarding and promoting human rights across the nation.
