No Proposal to Impose Fees on UPI Payments: Finance Ministry Clarifies

The Finance Ministry on Wednesday dismissed reports suggesting that the government plans to levy charges on payments made through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

In an official statement shared on social media platform X, the ministry clarified that there is no proposal under consideration to charge users for UPI transactions. “The government is not making any effort in this direction,” the statement emphasized.

The clarification comes in response to widespread reports circulating on major internet platforms claiming that payments exceeding ₹3,000 made via UPI could attract fees.

Currently, UPI payments are exempt from any charges under the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) policy, and no transaction fees are imposed on users or merchants.

The Finance Ministry strongly refuted claims that this policy might change, stating that the government remains committed to promoting digital payments.

Officials noted that UPI usage has grown rapidly in recent years, with users now even making payments as small as ₹10 through the platform. The ministry reiterated that no charges will be introduced, underscoring the government’s aim to encourage widespread adoption of digital transactions.
