Not Just a PIN Code, Now Your Address Will Also Be Known by a 10-Digit 'Digi PIN'

Soon, your address will not be known only by the Postal Index Number (PIN) introduced in 1972, but also by a 10-digit digital code called 'Digi PIN.' The Department of Posts is preparing to launch this digital code to further simplify the postal system and enhance efficiency. With the introduction of the Digi PIN, anyone can locate your precise address more accurately.

The department is currently in the process of assigning a unique Digi PIN code to 10 lakh (1 million) locations and addresses across the country. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development.

How Digi PIN Works

The Digi PIN will work like a unique geolocation code that identifies a specific place, providing exact information about any address. For instance, if a person lives in a remote village or a crowded urban area where addresses are not clearly marked, this new code will provide precise details, making it easier for the postal department and other services to locate addresses.

Why Digi PIN is Needed

Currently, many rural areas and some urban regions face difficulties due to unclear or non-standardized addresses. The current system of PIN codes does not provide the exact geolocation of a house, building, or locality. To address this issue, the Department of Posts is working to generate a unique Digi PIN code for every address in the country.

Each 10-digit Digi PIN will be linked to a specific geographic location, accurate up to four square meters. It will also help in uniquely identifying homes, offices, or any other type of establishment. The Digi PIN will be a geocoded address locator that works in tandem with Global Positioning System (GPS) services to pinpoint any location.

Benefits of Digi PIN

  • Accuracy: Whether it's a village or a city, the Digi PIN will provide accurate information about the location.
  • Ease of Use: It will eliminate the confusion caused by unclear addresses and enhance the delivery system.
  • Universal Application: The Digi PIN will work in conjunction with GPS technology and will be accessible through mobile devices.

The department plans to implement the Digi PIN system nationwide, covering every address, and will make the Digi Pins accessible through the India Post website and GPS services. This is expected to bring a revolutionary change in the way addresses are identified and located across the country.
