Samsung Workers to Resume Duties; No Pay for Strike Days
Employees at Samsung India Electronics Ltd., who had been on strike demanding better wages and improved working conditions, will return to work starting Thursday, according to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).
The CITU had been leading the employee protest since September 9, advocating for salary adjustments and official recognition of the newly formed Samsung India Workers Union. The decision to end the 37-day strike came after discussions facilitated by the Tamil Nadu government between the workers and the company's management.
A general meeting was held on Wednesday near Samsung’s Sriperumbudur factory, where the workers decided to call off the strike. “The strike is officially over. Employees will resume work on October 17,” confirmed CITU state president A Soundararajan. He further clarified that, under Samsung India's "No Work, No Pay" policy, employees would not receive compensation for the duration of the strike.
Samsung released a statement expressing gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government for its support and welcomed the workers back unconditionally, assuring that no disciplinary action would be taken against those who participated in the strike. The company emphasized that it values the commitment of its workforce and is eager to resume normal operations.
