Silver Hallmarking to Become Mandatory Nationwide Within Six Months
The Government of India is preparing to make hallmarking of silver mandatory across the country within the next six months, following the model already implemented for gold. Beginning from September, hallmarking will be required for all silver ornaments and products based on their purity standards.
According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), hallmarking of silver jewellery and articles is currently being carried out on a voluntary basis, but the process is now undergoing final testing before being made compulsory. This will be the first time that hallmarking of silver will be mandatory in India, marking a significant step towards consumer protection and quality assurance.
100% Purity Assurance for Consumers
BIS Director General Pramod Tiwari stated that mandatory hallmarking will guarantee 100% purity for silver products, giving customers complete confidence in the quality of their purchases. Once the regulation comes into effect, sellers will no longer be able to deceive customers by misrepresenting silver content or mixing inferior metals.
Consumers will also benefit from increased transparency, as the hallmark will serve as a certified guarantee of purity and authenticity. Even silver items manufactured from recycled metals will be tested and certified under the new hallmarking norms.
Quality and Standards Under BIS
The hallmarking process will adhere to BIS quality benchmarks and incorporate UID (Unique Identification Number) codes for every certified product. The government has also established advanced purity levels and testing standards to ensure that silver quality is accurately verified.
