500 Wells to Be Revived in Ghaziabad to Recharge Groundwater

District administration initiates large-scale plan to tackle falling water levels

With groundwater depletion emerging as a serious concern in the district, the Ghaziabad administration has announced an ambitious plan to revive 500 abandoned wells across various blocks. The initiative aims to enhance groundwater recharge and ensure sustainable water availability for future generations.

A recent survey conducted under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan revealed alarming figures. In areas such as Bhojpur block, the water level has fallen from 9.52 meters to 10.21 meters, while in Loni block it has dropped from 24 meters to 23.96 meters. Similar declines were reported in Muradnagar, Razapur, and Sihani blocks. Experts warn that unchecked depletion poses a grave risk to agriculture and drinking water supply.

District Magistrate Abhinav Goyal, who chaired a review meeting with officials, directed departments to identify and restore traditional wells to improve percolation. The project will involve technical support from the Groundwater Department and is expected to begin later this year.

Officials estimate that once revived, these wells will help replenish 2,500 crore liters of groundwater annually, providing relief to farmers and residents alike. The administration also appealed to local communities to actively participate in maintaining these water structures.
