Bhadohi’s Carpet Industry Struggles Amidst Government Neglect

Renowned globally for its exquisite carpets, Bhadohi has long been celebrated as the “Carpet City.” This sector employs over 20 lakh people. However, despite being awarded the “Town of Excellence” status by the government, several development plans remain unimplemented, leading to the closure of container yards and dry ports.

Impact on Employment and Women’s Empowerment The carpet industry in Bhadohi plays a vital role in women's economic empowerment. Many women are spinning yarn and weaving carpets, contributing significantly to the sector. However, due to the absence of modern facilities and the closure of dry ports, the industry has faced export challenges, leaving many workers unemployed.
Export Decline and Financial Setbacks Currently, the carpet industry’s annual exports amount to ₹14,900 crores, with Bhadohi contributing ₹4,200 crores. Despite this substantial output, the lack of infrastructure and policies has hindered growth. Skilled workers are dwindling, and production costs are rising, making competition with international markets difficult.

Demands from Entrepreneurs have outlined several demands:
●    Subsidies for exports to offset rising costs.
●    Reviving old projects like container yards and dry ports to ease logistics.
●    Allocating sufficient funds in the upcoming budget to revive the carpet industry.
Government Initiatives and Challenges Though the government promised various initiatives, such as modernising the industry and introducing tax benefits, most of these plans are yet to materialise. As a result, the sector faces severe challenges, including reduced orders and increased competition.

Expectations from the Budget Stakeholders hope the government will allocate special funds in the upcoming budget to revive the industry. With proper support, Bhadohi can reclaim its global position as a leader in the carpet market.
The artisans of Bhadohi are determined to keep their craft alive, but without immediate intervention, the carpet industry may face an uncertain future.
