Domestic Sports Industry Seeks Inclusion in Special Category for Growth

With India gearing up to host the Olympics in 2036, the country’s sports manufacturing industry, led by cities like Meerut and Jalandhar, is seeking much-needed government support to realise its full potential. Despite being key hubs for sports goods production, these cities face several challenges limiting their growth and international competitiveness.

India’s annual sports goods business stands at ₹40,000 crores, with exports amounting to ₹3,065.83 crores. However, industry leaders believe these numbers could grow by 15-20% annually if the government introduces supportive policies and incentives.

Key Demands from the Industry:
1.    Inclusion in Special Incentive Schemes: The industry seeks recognition under government-backed promotional programs like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to improve manufacturing efficiency and exports.
2.    Infrastructure Development: Establishment of advanced facilities, testing labs, and training centres to meet international standards.
3.    Ease of Export Regulations: Simplifying export procedures and reducing duties to help manufacturers compete globally.
4.    Research & Development Support: Encouraging innovation and modern production techniques to ensure high-quality output.
5.    Marketing and Branding: Assistance in promoting Indian-made sports goods on global platforms to create a more substantial presence.

Industry Challenges:
●    Lack of modern facilities and testing infrastructure for ensuring compliance with international quality standards.
●    Increasing competition from cheaper, imported sports goods.
●    Insufficient financial support for small and medium enterprises engaged in manufacturing.

Bright Future with the Olympics:
Meerut and Jalandhar are known for their high-quality cricket bats, hockey sticks, and other sports goods, making them critical contributors to India’s sports ecosystem. The Olympics presents a golden opportunity to boost the "Make in India" brand in sports manufacturing. If properly nurtured, the industry could create new jobs and establish India as a global leader in the sports goods market.
Industry representatives urge the government to recognise the sector's potential and include it in future budget plans to ensure robust growth and sustainability.
