Harnandi Riverfront Project Set to Take Off Soon in Ghaziabad
The ambitious plan to develop a scenic riverfront along the Harnandi River in Ghaziabad is soon expected to receive final approval. Local MLA Atul Garg and Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh have both indicated that the project is gaining momentum after a favorable response from the Central Government.
In a letter to Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, MLA Garg requested swift action on the proposal for a comprehensive riverfront project similar to the one being developed along the Hindon River. Minister Singh responded positively and issued instructions to the Principal Secretary of the Water Resources Department to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the Harnandi Riverfront.
Project Highlights:
- The riverfront aims to revive and beautify the Harnandi River, transforming it into a clean and green public space.
- 70% of the land along the river belongs to the Central Government, easing land acquisition and clearance issues.
- The proposal also includes improving the city's drainage system, redirecting polluted water from drains away from the river.
- Once approved, the Harnandi project will be developed on similar lines as the Hindon Riverfront, ensuring ecological and recreational benefits.
Statements from Authorities:
Speaking to the media, Swatantra Dev Singh emphasized that the riverfront development will not only enhance the city’s landscape but also support environmental sustainability and public health. He confirmed that the necessary administrative steps have been initiated to begin the DPR process.
MLA Atul Garg added that the Harnandi riverfront would offer a new public space for recreation and environmental education, helping restore a neglected water body while supporting Ghaziabad’s smart city vision.
Future Outlook
With planning under way and inter-departmental cooperation in progress, the Harnandi Riverfront project is expected to begin implementation shortly after monsoon 2025. Officials are optimistic that the project will significantly boost the city’s urban ecosystem and become a model for river rejuvenation in urban India.
