India to Be in a Better Position than China in Trade with the U.S.
New Delhi: With Donald Trump expected to return as the U.S. President, new opportunities might open up for India, although some sectors like pharmaceuticals and IT might face challenges due to stricter regulations. Experts believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rapport with Trump could positively influence India-U.S. relations. However, India may need to modify its policies to maintain cooperation in mutually beneficial sectors.
Rajiv Kumar, former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, stated that Trump's presidency could create new opportunities for India. Trump may impose tariffs and import restrictions on countries he considers not aligned with American policies, including China and some European nations. This could lead to increased export opportunities for India.
Additionally, a report by the Brookings Institution highlighted that Trump's trade policies might primarily impact economies more reliant on exports, like China. Trump is expected to support major U.S. investments in India and could place significant tariffs on Chinese products.
Madras School of Economics Director NR Bhanu Murthy expressed scepticism, suggesting that Trump might impose tariffs on Indian goods as well, especially if U.S. concerns about trade imbalances focus more on China.
