NGT Bans Use of Tiles Around Trees in Green Zones

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a ban on laying tiles around trees, footpaths, and green belts, citing environmental and ecological concerns. This decision comes as a major step in preserving soil health and the well-being of urban trees.

The NGT issued the order on May 17, but it came to public attention on Friday. The directive prohibits all municipal bodies, development authorities, and related agencies from using tiles or concrete around trees in parks and public places.

This ruling stems from a case filed by environmental activist Vikrant Tongad, who highlighted how tiling close to tree trunks severely affects root health, water absorption, and oxygen intake. According to him, this practice has been ongoing for years, and the plea filed in 2022 demanded strict action against such encroachments.

The NGT’s principal bench issued the final order stating that no tiles or concrete should be used up to at least 1 meter around any tree, and any violations would result in strict consequences.

Authorities have been instructed to take immediate corrective action in areas like Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and other NCR cities where this practice is still in place. A compliance report must also be submitted to the NGT.
