Shanghai, Tokyo, and New York Top the List of Most Polluted Cities

Global Cities Contributing to Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Shanghai, Tokyo, New York City, and Houston have emerged as the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, driving the acceleration of climate change. Among these, Shanghai ranks the highest in greenhouse gas emissions, with an annual output of 256 million metric tons. The statistics were released during COP29, highlighting the urgent need for emission reductions in urban centres.
China Leads in Urban Emissions
Of the top seven regions emitting over 400 million metric tons of greenhouse gases, six are in China, with Texas being the only non-Chinese region on the list. This underscores China's dominant role in global emissions, even as it continues efforts to address climate change.
U.S. and Global Contributions
American cities like New York and Houston contribute significantly, with emissions of 160 million and 150 million metric tons, respectively. If Tokyo were considered a separate country, it would rank among the top 40 emitters globally.
Rising Emissions in India and China
From 2022 to 2023, nations like China, India, Iran, and Indonesia reported substantial increases in emissions. Meanwhile, developed countries like Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom showed marked reductions in pollution.
Criticism of COP29's Host Country
COP29, held in Azerbaijan, faced criticism for being hosted by a major fossil fuel-producing nation. Critics pointed out the contradiction of conducting climate talks in a country reliant on oil and gas exports. Experts also emphasized that controlling emissions from the fossil fuel industry is essential to combating climate change.
Urgency for Global Cooperation
The conference discussions revolved around global strategies to cut emissions. Key questions raised include how developed nations like the U.S. will finance emission reductions and support developing countries in their climate goals.
This latest data serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collaborative global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and reduce pollution in urban areas.
