UP, Bihar, and Uttarakhand to Receive Projects Worth INR 1,000 Crore for Ganga Conservation and Cleanliness
Under the National Mission for Clean Ganga, projects worth INR 1,062 crore have been approved for the conservation and cleanliness of the river Ganga. These projects are related to sewage treatment, rejuvenation, and the development of rivers and their tributaries in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand.
The approval was granted in the 48th meeting of the Executive Committee chaired by G. Asok Kumar, Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). In addition to sewage treatment projects, the approved schemes include the development of ghats and crematoriums.
Aligarh Receives INR 488 Crore for Sewerage Projects
Under this scheme, 16 sewerage projects, including the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh, have been approved. The projects will increase the sewerage capacity of Aligarh by 65 million liters per day (MLD) through the construction of a new 60 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) and the upgrading of the existing 5 MLD STP.
Three STPs to be Constructed in Supaul District
For the Supaul district of Bihar, three STPs will be constructed with an investment of INR 76.69 crore. This includes the construction of two STPs with a capacity of 6.68 MLD and one STP with a capacity of 3.44 MLD. Along with this, a total of 35 km of sewer lines will also be laid.
Plants to be Set Up in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Shrinagar, and Devprayag
In Uttarakhand, for pollution management, three projects worth INR 78 crore will be set up to manage the solid waste of Haridwar, Rishikesh, Shrinagar, and Devprayag. The project includes the construction of a 50 MLD leachate treatment plant and a 150 TPD (tons per day) capacity waste-to-energy plant.
Rejuvenation of Janhvi River for Enhanced Efficiency
A project to rejuvenate the Janhvi River (Pilakhar) in Uttar Pradesh has been approved with an investment of INR 24 crore. The project involves the cleaning and excavation of the river, covering a length of 5.2 km from Pilakhar's origin to the Bhola Jheel (lake) along with the restoration of the river’s biodiversity.
Online Monitoring System for Operations and Cleanliness
The meeting also reviewed the performance of the ongoing online monitoring system for the operation, maintenance, and cleanliness of the facilities. For the projects already under implementation, the need for online monitoring has been emphasized to ensure proper maintenance and to prevent untreated wastewater from entering the Ganga and its tributaries.
This plan is expected to be completed by 2025. It includes the construction of crematoriums in five districts of Bihar (Buxar, Saran, Bhagalpur, Munger, and Bhojpur) at a cost of INR 23 crore. Additionally, ghats will be developed in three districts of Bihar, namely Darbhanga, Katihar, and Khagaria, with a budget of INR 35 crore.
